How to find a job in Australia as a working holiday maker

Moving to Australia for a working holiday can be an exciting yet daunting experience. To start, potential working holiday makers should familiarise themselves with the relevant Australian visa requirements, their entitlements, and the limited number of hours they can work each week.

Once those basic steps are complete, the next step is to start looking for a job! To simplify things, here’s a list we have created full of the best ways to find work in Australia.

Work as freely as you live.

1. Sven Jobs

Sven Jobs is an app powered by technology that matches workers with job providers based on their skills, experience, location, and availability. Did we mention it's completely FREE for workers!

Sven pays all your shifts in one weekly payment and automatically calculates rates, breaks and allowances based on modern awards and other legal requirements. We developed Sven so that you can join and apply for shifts in minutes. We work for you so that you can swap out the cringe CV updates and in-person interviews for a seamless online experience.

Sven is available in New South Wales, Australia, in December 2022 for the restaurant, hospitality and fast-food industries. Sven Jobs will expand to the rest of Australia, and more industries, in 2023.

You can download the Sven Jobs app on the App store and Google Play store or jump on the waiting list for all other states and territories at https://www.svenjobs.com.au/.

2. Social Media

Social media platforms such as Facebook Groups and LinkedIn are invaluable in finding work opportunities and providing insider tips on what's available and who's hiring.

Facebook

Many groups are dedicated to helping workers match with businesses, all of which can help you narrow down job opportunities by location, industry and even Visa subclass.

Although, watch out! Some poorly managed groups contain spam, inappropriate content, and false advertisements. To alleviate and minimise your exposure to potential scams, Sven supervises and oversees the following groups.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a professional networking site that can be used to find jobs. Although it's not specifically for Australian jobs, many companies post positions on LinkedIn, so it's worth setting up a profile and searching for jobs that match your skills and experience.

Australian Government Jobactive Website

The Australian Government Jobactive website is a great place to start your job search. It has a wide range of jobs listed, from entry-level to professional positions. You can also search by keyword, location, and industry.

3. Job Boards

There are also various job boards dedicated to people on a Working Holiday Visa. These job boards usually have a range of different jobs available, from seasonal work to bar work and everything in between.

You can also search for jobs on general job boards, such as Seek or Indeed, which cater specifically to the Australian market. However, be mindful that both platforms may require lengthy application processes depending on the job. Also, be sure to use some keywords to ensure you only see job results you're eligible for (i.e. "working holiday visa").

Once you've found a few potential jobs, the next step is to start applying! Make sure your CV is up-to-date and tailored to each role, and include any relevant experience you have. If you have little experience, don't worry - many employers are willing to give people on working holiday visas a chance. Just be enthusiastic and show them what a great asset you would be. Good luck!
